WalletConnect Token: the token of the WalletConnect Network
WalletConnect is a network that links crypto wallets to apps: you scan a QR code or tap a link, and your wallet can approve actions in the app without handing over its keys. The WalletConnect Token (WCT) is used for staking, rewards and governance of that network. Its main contract is on Ethereum, and the WalletConnect Foundation stewards the network.
Key Aspects of WalletConnect Token
1. How the network works
The WalletConnect Network passes encrypted messages between wallets and apps. Service Nodes store messages, Gateway Nodes route the encrypted traffic, and a relay service connects wallets to apps. The network is chain-agnostic, which means it works with many different blockchains rather than just one.
2. What the WCT token is used for
WCT has three main functions: staking, rewards and governance. Holders stake WCT to gain voting power and a share of weekly rewards, and they vote on proposals and network changes. Payment fees on the network flow back into it and help fund those rewards.
3. How staking works
A staking position's weight depends on two things: how much WCT is staked and how long it remains locked. Rewards are shared each week in proportion to each position's weight, and the weight shrinks gradually once an unlock begins.
4. Token design
WCT's initial supply is capped at 1 billion tokens. The token documentation states that any future inflation, meaning the creation of new tokens, would require a vote of token holders.
5. Governance
The WalletConnect Foundation stewards the network by promoting its adoption and growth and by overseeing grants, while the governance model is designed to hand decisions to WCT holders through proposals that they vote on.
