About Vana
Vana: a blockchain for user-owned data
Vana is an open protocol for user-controlled data. People keep their personal data in their own storage, called Personal Servers, and decide which apps and AI builders may use it; every permission is recorded on Vana L1, Vana's own blockchain. VANA is the network's native token. Vana L1's mainnet began producing blocks in October 2024.
Key Aspects of Vana
1. Personal Servers
A Personal Server stores a user's data and answers only the requests the user has approved. It can run in a desktop app, in a browser tab or on the user's own server, and data can be encrypted with keys derived from the user's wallet.
2. Permissions and fees
Apps request access to specific types of data, called scopes. Only the data owner can create or revoke a grant, and grants can carry an expiry date. Apps pay protocol fees from an on-chain escrow account, so payment for data access is recorded alongside the permission.
3. Vana L1
Vana L1 is a proof-of-stake blockchain compatible with Ethereum's tools. Validators stake VANA to secure the chain, and users can also stake VANA in data validators.
4. DataDAOs
DataDAOs are groups that pool data from many contributors. Their data can be used in privacy-preserving computing jobs, run inside trusted execution environments (secure areas of a processor), without exposing individual records.
5. What the VANA token is used for
VANA is staked by validators to secure the chain, pays gas fees for every on-chain transaction, gives holders a voice in governance, and is the default currency DataDAOs use for data access.
6. Token design
The total supply of VANA is capped at 120 million tokens: 44% for the community, 22.9% for the ecosystem, 18.8% for the team and 14.3% for investors, with a 13-month lock-up for team and investor tokens.
