About Taiko
Taiko: a based rollup that scales Ethereum
Taiko is a layer 2 network, a blockchain that runs on top of Ethereum. It is a based rollup: Ethereum's own validators order Taiko's blocks, so there is no central sequencer. Its mainnet runs the Taiko Alethia protocol and launched in May 2024, and the protocol is governed through the Taiko DAO by holders of the TAIKO token.
Key Aspects of Taiko
1. A based rollup
A rollup bundles many transactions together and posts them to Ethereum. In many rollups a single operator, called a sequencer, decides the order of transactions; in a based rollup that job is done by Ethereum's validators, so Taiko has no central sequencer.
2. Ethereum-equivalent
Taiko is a type-1 Ethereum-equivalent network: it behaves like Ethereum, so standard Ethereum wallets, tools and smart contracts work without changes. Transaction fees on Taiko are paid in ETH.
3. Proving and security
Batches of Taiko transactions are proved on Ethereum before they become final. Taiko's proof system combines different kinds of proofs, including zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, which mathematically show that a batch was computed correctly without re-running it.
4. What the TAIKO token is used for
Proposers, who submit batches of transactions to Ethereum, deposit TAIKO as a bond when they submit a proposal. TAIKO holders also govern the protocol through the Taiko DAO, which controls smart contract upgrades, network parameters and treasury allocation.
5. Token design
The TAIKO token contract on Ethereum has a total supply of 1 billion TAIKO.
6. Preconfirmations
To speed things up, a designated preconfer can give users an early, cryptographically signed commitment that their transaction will be included in a specific block, cutting effective confirmation times from about 12 seconds to between half a second and two seconds.
Taiko's Milestones
The TAIKO token contract was created on Ethereum in April 2024, and Taiko's mainnet produced its first block on 25 May 2024. The Pacaya protocol fork was released in May 2025, followed by the Shasta fork in April 2026.
