About Swarm
Swarm: decentralised storage and messaging for the web
Swarm is a peer-to-peer network, where computers connect directly rather than through a central server, that stores and distributes data and provides communication without a single point of control. Anyone can join by running its node software, Bee. BZZ is its token: an ERC-20 token created on Ethereum and bridged to Gnosis Chain as xBZZ, the version the network uses. The project is supported by the Swarm Foundation.
Key Aspects of Swarm
1. How it works
Data is stored across many independent nodes, which are paid for keeping it and for passing it along, so no single party controls it. Running a full Bee node gives access to all of Swarm's functions.
2. Paying for storage with postage stamps
To upload data, users buy postage stamps in batches with xBZZ. The xBZZ spent on stamps later funds the rewards for storing data.
3. Rewards for storing data
Full nodes that stake xBZZ and store data share the stamp payments through a redistribution game, in which honest storage is the most profitable strategy. A price oracle uses data from the same game to adjust the price of stamps.
4. Paying for bandwidth
Nodes also pay each other for relaying data, either in kind by exchanging data or with cheques redeemed through a contract on Gnosis Chain.
5. Token design
The supply of BZZ is fixed at 63,149,437 tokens. BZZ moves between Ethereum and Gnosis Chain through a bridge.
6. Who it is for
Swarm is aimed at developers building apps that need storage and messaging without relying on a central provider.
