About SQD
SQD: a decentralised data network for blockchain developers
SQD, the project formerly branded Subsquid, gives developers fast access to blockchain data. Its SQD Network is a decentralised data lake that stores data from many blockchains and serves it on request, and its tools let developers build indexers and query that data. SQD is built by Subsquid Labs GmbH, whose open-source work dates back to 2021, and the SQD token is deployed on Ethereum and bridged to Arbitrum One.
Key Aspects of SQD
1. Why indexing matters
Blockchains store data in a way that is reliable but slow to search. An indexer reads the chain and organises its data, such as transfers or trades, so apps can find what they need quickly instead of scanning every block.
2. The SQD Network
Blockchain data is compressed and split among the network's nodes, called workers. Each worker stores its share and serves it to clients peer-to-peer, earning SQD rewards for doing so.
3. Developer tools
Developers can query data directly through the Portal API, build their own indexers with the TypeScript Squid SDK, host them on SQD Cloud, or connect AI tools through an MCP server, a standard way for AI agents to use outside data.
4. What the SQD token is used for
Workers bond SQD to register on-chain, and holders can delegate SQD to workers to signal that they are reliable. Locking SQD gives compute units that pay for queries, and workers earn rewards each epoch based on their uptime and the data they serve. SQD holders can also vote on protocol changes.
5. Token design
During the network's initial three-year bootstrapping phase, the total supply of SQD is fixed, and 10% of the supply was set aside at the token's launch for the worker reward pool.
SQD's Milestones
Subsquid's GitHub organisation was created in June 2021, and its Squid SDK repository followed in December 2021. The project later rebranded from Subsquid to SQD.
