About Scroll
Scroll: a zero-knowledge layer 2 for Ethereum
Scroll is a layer 2 network, a blockchain that runs on top of Ethereum to make transactions faster and cheaper while relying on Ethereum for security. It is a zk-rollup: it bundles many transactions together and posts them to Ethereum with a zero-knowledge proof, a cryptographic proof that the transactions were processed correctly. Scroll is EVM-compatible, and its SCR token governs the Scroll DAO.
Key Aspects of Scroll
1. How Scroll works
Scroll has three layers. Ethereum is the settlement layer: it stores Scroll's data and transaction order and checks its proofs. The sequencing layer runs transactions, produces blocks and posts batches to Ethereum. The proving layer is a pool of provers that generate the zero-knowledge proofs.
2. A zkEVM
Scroll's zkEVM runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine in a form that can be proven with zero-knowledge proofs, so developers can deploy Ethereum smart contracts with familiar tools.
3. Bridge to Ethereum
Bridge and rollup contracts on Ethereum handle messages and assets moving between Ethereum and Scroll, with finality coming from the validity proofs checked on Ethereum.
4. What SCR is used for
SCR is the governance token of the Scroll DAO. Holders vote on proposals or delegate their votes to delegates, who make governance decisions on their behalf, including network upgrades and the councils that run parts of the DAO.
5. Token design
SCR has a total supply of 1 billion tokens.
Scroll's Milestones
March 2025: the Scroll DAO Constitution was approved. April 2025: the DAO approved the Euclid upgrade. September 2025: the Feynman upgrade was executed. December 2025: the Galileo upgrade was executed. January 2026: the DAO adopted its updated governance framework, Scroll DAO 2.0.
