SATS (Ordinals) is a BRC-20 token, a type of token created directly on the Bitcoin blockchain using the Ordinals protocol. Its name comes from satoshis, the smallest unit of bitcoin: one satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC. The token was deployed in March 2023, and its community describes it as a meme coin on Bitcoin.

1. How BRC-20 Works
The Ordinals protocol lets people inscribe data, such as text or images, onto individual satoshis. BRC-20 tokens are created by inscribing short text messages that say deploy, mint or transfer. Indexers, programs that read these inscriptions, then work out who holds how many tokens.
2. Token Design
SATS has a maximum supply of 2,100,000,000,000,000 tokens (2.1 quadrillion). That equals the number of satoshis in bitcoin's full supply: 21 million BTC times 100 million satoshis each.
3. Open Minting
The deploy inscription set a limit of 100 million SATS per mint. Anyone could create new SATS by inscribing a mint message, up to that limit each time, until the maximum supply was reached.
4. Who It Is For
SATS is used by people in the Bitcoin Ordinals community who want a token that lives on Bitcoin itself and celebrates its smallest unit.
