PepeCoin: a Pepe-themed cryptocurrency from 2016 that moved to Ethereum
PepeCoin, also known as Memetic (MEME), is a Pepe-themed cryptocurrency that launched in 2016 on its own blockchain. In 2023 it was bridged to Ethereum as an ERC-20 token. The project calls itself the original Pepe coin, developed since 2016.
Key Aspects of PepeCoin
1. The Original Blockchain
PepeCoin began as a proof-of-work cryptocurrency, in which miners use computing power to secure the network and earn new coins. It used the X11 mining algorithm and a 60-second block time.
2. The Move to Proof of Stake
At block 1,700,000, in late 2018, the original chain switched fully to proof of stake, where holders who lock up coins secure the network and earn rewards. Its design rewards masternodes, special servers that help process transactions, alongside stakers.
3. Features of the Original Chain
The original PepeCoin wallet included decentralized encrypted private messaging, a public message wall stored on the blockchain, and stealth addresses for privacy. The project also built encrypted image storage on IPFS, a peer-to-peer file system, verified against the PepeCoin blockchain.
4. PepeCoin on Ethereum
Since 2023, PepeCoin has existed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, which lets it be used with Ethereum wallets and decentralized exchanges.

PepeCoin launched in 2016 on its own proof-of-work blockchain. Its original chain moved to full proof of stake at block 1,700,000 in late 2018. In 2023 PepeCoin was bridged to Ethereum as an ERC-20 token.
