Nimiq: a browser-friendly proof-of-stake payment blockchain
Nimiq is a blockchain built for simple, independent payments. Its apps and light clients run directly in a web browser, so people can use the network without installing special software or relying on a middleman. The Nimiq Foundation supports the protocol and ecosystem. Its coin is NIM.
Key Aspects of Nimiq
1. Browser-first design
Nimiq's Web Client lets apps talk to the blockchain directly from a browser, with no servers in between. Developers can build entirely in the browser, and users connect to the network themselves rather than through a third party.
2. Albatross proof of stake
Nimiq runs on Albatross, a proof-of-stake protocol: validators are chosen according to their stake, so the more NIM staked, the more likely they produce a block. Small blocks with transactions follow each other in about a second, and larger macro blocks, approved by at least two thirds of validator slots, make each batch final.
3. What NIM is used for
NIM is used for payments and to secure the network. Validators deposit NIM to take part, and holders can delegate smaller amounts to a validator from their wallet to share in the rewards.
4. Apps
The Nimiq Wallet lets people buy, stake and swap NIM; Nimiq Pay is a self-custodial payment app, where users hold their own keys; and Cryptopayment.link lets merchants accept payments.
5. Open source
Nimiq's software is open source. The source code of Nimiq Pay was published under the GPLv3 licence.
Nimiq's Milestones
November 2024: Nimiq moved from proof of work to proof of stake through a hard fork. August 2026: Nimiq Core v2.0.0 activated after validators signalled readiness on-chain. October 2026: the source code of Nimiq Pay was published.
