About Fuel Network
Fuel Network: a fast layer 2 for Ethereum with its own virtual machine
Fuel is a layer 2 for Ethereum, a rollup that runs on top of Ethereum and posts its data there to make transactions faster and cheaper. Its mainnet, Fuel Ignition, runs on the FuelVM, a virtual machine (the engine that runs smart contracts) designed for parallel processing. Developers write apps in Sway, Fuel's own programming language. Fuel Labs builds the core software.
Key Aspects of Fuel Network
1. How it works
Fuel uses a UTXO model, the same idea Bitcoin uses: each transaction declares in advance which parts of the network's state it will touch. Because these dependencies are known before execution, many transactions can run at the same time on different processor cores. Fuel also keeps node requirements low, so people can verify the chain on home hardware.
2. Sway and developer tools
Sway is a language built for blockchains and based on Rust, with Forc for building and testing projects and fuelup as the official toolchain manager. Sway also includes a transpiler that converts code written in Solidity, Ethereum's main language, into Sway.
3. What the FUEL token is used for
FUEL secures Fuel's decentralised sequencer, the system that orders transactions: holders can delegate FUEL to sequencer proposers and earn a share of staking rewards. FUEL also pays for sequencer resources such as data storage, ordering and block inclusion. Gas fees on Fuel Ignition are paid in ETH.
4. Token design
FUEL started with a supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens at genesis, with annual inflation of 3 percent set in its design. Tokens from the earlier Fuel V1 can be upgraded to FUEL at a ratio of 1 to 100.
5. Who it is for
Fuel is aimed at developers who want high throughput on Ethereum and at users who want lower fees while keeping Ethereum's security.
