Dymension: a home base for fast, app-specific blockchains
Dymension is a blockchain network built around RollApps, small, fast blockchains made for a single app that rely on a central hub for security, users and liquidity. That hub, the Dymension Hub, is a proof-of-stake chain built with the Cosmos SDK, a toolkit for making independent blockchains, and its code is published on GitHub under dymensionxyz. DYM is its native token.
Key Aspects of Dymension
1. How it works
Dymension splits the work into layers, much like a website: RollApps are the front end that users interact with, the Dymension Hub is the back end that secures them and settles their results, and data availability networks store their data, playing the role of a database. RollApps pass messages to each other through IBC, a standard for safe communication between chains.
2. Security and consensus
The Hub is a proof-of-stake chain: validators lock up DYM to produce blocks. If a RollApp's result is disputed, the Hub simulates the RollApp's execution of that transaction to settle which result is correct.
3. What the DYM token is used for
DYM is staked with validators. Stakers receive a share of newly issued tokens and of the gas fees users pay on the Hub, vote on governance proposals, and can endorse liquidity pools or RollApp teams to direct DYM incentives to them.
4. Token design
Dymension started with a genesis supply of 1 billion DYM. New tokens are issued each year at a rate that rises when less than half of the supply is staked and falls when more is staked, within limits that on-chain governance can adjust.
5. Launching a RollApp
A RollApp can start as a token and grow into a full blockchain. The Hub includes a built-in automated market maker, an exchange run by smart contracts, so RollApps share liquidity as well as security.
