About Degen
Degen: the community token born on Farcaster
Degen (DEGEN) is a community token on Base, a layer 2 network that runs on top of Ethereum to make transactions cheaper. It was born in the Degen channel of Farcaster, a decentralised social network, and launched in January 2024 with an airdrop to that channel's community. The project describes DEGEN as the social coin of Base.
Key Aspects of Degen
1. Origins in a Social Community
DEGEN started inside a Farcaster channel. At launch, 15% of the tokens were airdropped, given out for free, to early Farcaster users, and 15% were added to liquidity pools so the token could be traded.
2. Tipping
DEGEN introduced tipping as a way to share tokens and reward creators: community members send DEGEN to people whose posts and contributions they value.
3. Degen NFT
The Degen NFT collection gives members an identity within the DEGEN ecosystem, letting them own a piece of the culture the community created.
4. Token Design
DEGEN is an ERC-20 token on Base, at contract address 0x4ed4E862860beD51a9570b96d89aF5E1B0Efefed.
5. Who It Is For
DEGEN is made for internet-native communities, creators and collectors, especially members of the Farcaster and Base communities who use it to reward creators and take part in a shared culture.
