About Casper Network
Casper Network: a proof-of-stake blockchain with upgradable smart contracts
Casper Network is a layer 1 blockchain, a base network of its own, built for smart contracts and for real-world assets, meaning tokenized versions of physical or financial assets. It uses proof of stake, where holders lock tokens to secure the network instead of mining. The Casper Association, a Swiss not-for-profit, promotes the protocol's development and adoption. Casper's mainnet launched in March 2021, and its native token is CSPR.
Key Aspects of Casper Network
1. Proof of stake and delegation
Validators stake CSPR to take part in consensus and earn rewards. Holders who don't run a validator can delegate their CSPR to one and receive a share of its rewards. Undelegated tokens become available again after an unbonding period.
2. Zug consensus
Since Casper 2.0, the network uses Zug, a deterministic consensus protocol that brings instant finality: once a block is confirmed, it cannot be reversed.
3. Upgradable smart contracts
Smart contracts on Casper can be upgraded natively, with built-in multi-signature support and fine-grained permissions, so a team can update an app after it is deployed.
4. What CSPR is used for
CSPR pays for transactions and smart contract calls, is staked by validators and delegators to secure the network, and is used in liquid staking, which lets holders stake while keeping a token they can use elsewhere.
5. Casper 2.0 features
The Casper 2.0 upgrade added support for multiple virtual machines, native liquid staking within smart contract logic, zero-knowledge hashing for privacy-preserving identity and compliance, and a native token burning mechanism.
Casper Network's Milestones
March 2021: Casper's mainnet went live with its genesis block. May 2025: Casper 2.0 went live on mainnet, introducing Zug consensus and upgradable smart contracts.
