About Aurora
Aurora: an Ethereum-compatible network running on NEAR
Aurora lets developers run apps built for Ethereum on the NEAR Protocol, a separate blockchain designed for fast, low-cost transactions. It works as a smart contract on NEAR, so Ethereum tools and code can be used without changes. Aurora is built by Aurora Labs, and its AURORA token, launched in 2021, is the governance token of the Aurora DAO.
Key Aspects of Aurora
1. An EVM inside NEAR
The EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) is the engine that runs Ethereum smart contracts. Aurora implements a full EVM as a smart contract on NEAR, which makes it fully EVM-compatible. Transaction fees on the Aurora main network are paid in ETH.
2. Virtual Chains
Through Aurora Cloud, a project can launch its own Virtual Chain: a customizable, EVM-compatible chain that also runs as a smart contract on NEAR. Each chain can set its own permissions, such as which accounts may send transactions or deploy contracts, without running traditional layer 2 infrastructure.
3. The Rainbow Bridge
The Rainbow Bridge moves assets between Ethereum, NEAR and Aurora, so tokens can travel between the three networks.
4. What AURORA is used for
AURORA is the governance token created with the approval of the Aurora DAO, the community body that oversees the project. Part of the supply was set aside for staking rewards and for delegators to Aurora validators. AURORA is not the gas token.
5. Token design
AURORA has a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens, issued as a non-upgradable ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Aurora's contracts collect NEAR from transaction fees; that NEAR funds purchases of AURORA on the market, and the purchased tokens are burned, permanently removing them.
